Travellers tackling the heavyweight trio of the V & A, the Science Museum, and the Natural History Museum are unaware of this small treasure in their midst. But for history buffs, romantics and those just keen for a well-priced tea and cake after the museum odyssey, the Polish Hearth is one to root out. Originally opened during the Second World War, when the Polish government-in-exile was stationed in London, Ognisko no longer boasts the cast of aging generals and aristocrats, with their white moustaches and silver cigarette cases. But it's still a bastion of Polish culture, the walls bedecked with portraits of war heros and men of letters. Classic Polish is on the menu, and vodka and herring at the bar is also an option. In summer there's a terrace overlooking one of Kensington's secret gardens.
