Break off the beaten path by taking a taxi over the river to this jolly 17th Century style tavern. Inspired by the novel "With Fire and Sword" - Poland's answer to The Three Musketeers - this rumbustious restaurant is a Krakow classic. Yes, it's kitsch - ye olde wooden furnishings, waitresses in buxom wench outfits - but it's all done with great panache. Take a table by the open fire and order up a flagon of ale. Flicking through the menu, you'll find that the recipes are sourced from the ancient Jagiellonian Library. This may actually be a bit of an "own goal", as some of the hearty dishes of old could do with a contemporary tweak. That said, the shashlyks (mieso z kija) are nothing short of scrumptious, with the skewered pork delivered flaming in Polish vodka. The ribs are also popular, likewise the Solanka soup. There's a bit of an overabundance of "rustic" restaurants in Krakow, but this one is a cut above the rest.
