Inconspicuously hidden down a tight alleyway, which on first discovery may not entice the traveller to explore, the Nell Gwynne offers the opportunity to experience what it must feel like to be an insect trapped in a nugget of amber. Is it small? Yes. Is it intimate? Most definitly. Is it cosy? Ish. A good place to come if there are just a couple of you, on offer is the usual London pub choice including a small (of course) selection of ales. This place does have character (note the dangerous stairs down to the loos) and a decent amount of charm, and no doubt endless history; one could start to imagine what the patrons of a past time must have been like; I picture rotund individuals slamming their flagons of ale on the tables, playing cards, talking business and being generally rowdy. Today you still get the local business folk flock here after the daily grind and they often spill out into the alleyway to maximise valuable space. There is a good vibe from the clientele I think mainly because this place does still attract regulars, which is uncommon in central London. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood.
