Bar Flisak
About Bar Flisak
With a vista swamped by Wawel Castle, Bar Flisak harks back to the olden days, and is one of a mere handful of surviving milk bars in Krakow that functions much like it would have done 40 years previous. Inside you place your order with a lady dressed in a long white apron who then shouts this to the kitchen behind her. Moments later your dishes will appear, piping hot, through a hatch. Everything here is plain and basic: the cutlery is plastic, the napkins practically transparent, the walls bare apart from the large menu fixed on one side, the furniture functional.
The food is basic and cheap. On the menu, which I am quite sure has remained unaltered for many a year, is a good selection of traditional Polish cuisines. A plate of pierogi ruskie (the classic Polish dumplings) is less than 3zł, which suggests the prices have also remained untouched for a while.
Both the old and young frequent Flisak for some rest bite from the cold and to fill up with warm food and tea. The customers, as much as the décor, provide you with a realisation of the real Poland, a Poland of the past but to some degree of today too.
Flisak might not be the place for everyone but I find it fascinating and you can always be sure to get good honest food.

These milk bars are a Polish institution - fantastic! Fortunately, most tourists will be scared off by their appearance, and the prices will remain locked in the '80's...
