A sister branch of Krakow's popular Mleczarnia bar, the Wroclaw version was built along pretty much the same lines - rickety tables, old Jewish portraits and a complete absence of electrical lighting. Actually it seems to work much better here. Whereas in Krakow broody bars for Bohemians and beatniks are two a groszy, Mleczarnia in Wroclaw occupies a valuable niche in the market and moreover, thanks to its popularity, it can rightfully claim to have led the revitalization of the city's crumbling Jewish district. Wlodkowica street is now chock full of swanky bars and restaurants. The opening of a huge more modern downstairs doesn't seem to have detracted from the atmosphere and allows for a lively programme of events - often leaning towards the experimental jazz variety unfortunately, but still. Meanwhile the upstairs remains the best place in town to strike up a pseudo-intelligent conversation and munch on their delicious salmon on toast. Just a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkling of black pepper on mine please.
