The Rock and Sole Plaice
About The Rock and Sole Plaice
Frustratingly there is a dearth of places to get a good fish supper in central London; shining like the northern star in the night sky there is one place to frequent, The Rock and Sole Plaice. They have been feeding London for over 100 years now and so know how to do their job. You can sit at the ground level, cocooned in the scent of freshly fried fish and watching people endlessly come and go, go downstairs for a bit more solitude or, my personal favourite, park yourself at one of the wooden tables lining the pavement outside.
The large menu occupying the wall behind the counter shows off all the classic main courses and accessories that one would expect in a good old chippy. The question isn’t where to begin, but more appropriately where to end. If you occupy a table in the main room you could be forgiven for forgetting that you are in London and that when you step out of the door it won’t be onto a seaside promenade with seagulls hovering menacingly overhead.
Prices are not cheap. Haddock and chips will set you back £10 if you sit in. Of course instead of staying here you can get them wrapped to take away with you. Wash everything down with a cup of tea, or if you prefer a cold beer.
If you are coming to London, make sure it is on your list, and don’t worry if you make more than one visit.
