About Marinos Restaurant

It’s lunchtime. I’m hungry. I’m in central London. I meander down to Marino’s. As I approach I start to salivate pavlovically.

Located just north of the eastern end of Oxford Street this family-run sandwich bar is a nice lunchtime venue, offering great, simple Italian food. The choice is yours; either join the chattering masses and sit at one of the small tables crammed far to close together, with Italian football playing on the tellies hovering above, or take-out and try and find a quiet spot away from the hoards of London. Lunchtime here is always busy so if you want to get a seat come early, or come late but risk a more limited selection – the destruction of the local office workers.

On entrance you are faced with rows of sandwiches stacked one on top of another and numerous dishes of homemade pasta. Sandwiches cost around £4 and the choice is bewildering. The paste £5, fairly decent when you know you are getting good, honest food. The usual array of drinks, and often a good selection of cakes are also available. The busy staff rush to and fro taking and fulfilling orders. They shout to each other in a mixture of Italian and English, which punctures the general hum of conversation from the seating area.

The atmosphere is nothing special and there are plenty of other places nearby if you just want a coffee, but the food is the draw and by looking at the crowds scoffing down their ravioli I know I’m not the only one who comes here again and again.
