About Gordons Wine Bar

This subterranean bar next to Embankment underground station is everything that it should be: dark, dank, and the vender of great wine. Consisting of two rooms, the first where you descend into the gloom from the street above and which houses the bar, the second a pokey annex with a low vaulted ceiling, which if you are of average height you will bang your head on from time to time, and from where the odd drop of water falls on the customers below. The darkness is interrupted intermittently by flickering candles placed in old, wax-covered wine bottles, which are located on each table. A mishmash of furniture completes the scene.

To the wine – a very good selection of very good wine. The menu may be a bit daunting so if you are in need of advice do ask the staff who are fairly knowledgeable. Expect to pay at least £15 for a bottle. If you enjoy white wine I recommend Echeverria, a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. If you fancy a nibble to accompany your drink a selection of cheese and meats are available, which you can scoff down with bread and pickles.

It does get busy here however with crowds from the nearby offices, tourists, and those Londoners who are simply after good wine and good surroundings, so get there early or be patient. Once you’re in and settled Gordon’s does have a knack of keeping you there, so be careful if you have brought the credit card with you.
