Beijing Far East Youth Hostel
- Located in the heart of a traditional Chinese neighborhood, yet only a five minute bike ride from Tiananmen Square, the Far East International Youth Hostel (not to be confused with the Far East Hotel, located across the street) is by far the best cheap accommodation you can find in Beijing, short of staying with a local family. The rooms go for about 10 Euro per night (rooms of maximum 4 people, not those overcrowded 12-bed affairs like some hostels), and if you stay in the summer, you can hang out on the gorgeous terrace courtyard. But the absolute best part is the location; tiny Chinese streets, barely navigable by bike (and yet you'll catch some cars desperately honking by), lined with restaurant after restaurant with no Westerners in sight (that's how you know they're good), not to mention the countless "food-on-a-stick"s you can buy on the street, as well as shops selling everything from tea to dolls - this is the quickly-disappearing heart of China at your doorstep.
