About Tokio Express

Tokio Express is a restaurant with a half-Polish, half-English name, which serves fast Chinese food and take away sushi. Confused yet? I am.

The first thing to keep in mind about Tokio Express is its location - the Złote Tarasy shopping mall. If you are in any way accustomed to the kind of Chinese food usually served in malls worldwide (i.e. the fake kind), you may understand my nostalgic attraction to it. But amazingly at Tokio Express the the beef tastes like beef and the chicken like chicken (not always obvious), and the veggies are surprisingly crunchy and fresh. Clearly the chefs here missed a vital day at Cooking 101- "The Holy Trinity of Asian Cooking in Poland: Overcooking Everything, Burnt Oil, and MSG".

Looking online it seems Poles do not share my enthusiasm for Mall Chinese, giving Tokio Express an average rating of 2 of 5 stars. Here the highest rated Chinese restaurant is in fact Thai, further contributing to my theory that Poles do not completely comprehend the borders within Asia. But who can really blame them when the standard fare is served and named by Vietnamese immigrants (though confusingly subtitled "Chinese Kitchen") who charge the price of a kebab for a meal. But who am I to judge - I grew up in a culture considering chicken balls as the height of Eastern cooking.

Admittedly Tokio Express is not without its faults - the ubiquitous cabbage salad is still present - but you can't complain for 20 zloty for a full meal of uncomplicated and yummy food.
