About Horai

Horai is one of those places where even the very best intentions can sometimes get a little off-track. There is certainly no denying that it is one of the only places in Krakow where you can taste the real(ish) flavours of East Asia, but with such a huge market gap to fill, Horai seems to be overwhelmed and maybe even a little bit lost. The food is a commendable effort towards Asian authenticity, and If your idea of Chinese food is a trip to one of the various bright red and suspiciously named (A-Dong anyone?) MSG factories located around the city, you may be surprised at the clean, fresh flavours this cuisine is actually capable of. That said, looking into the menu at Horai is quite an endeavour - 30 pages of food and drink are on offer (yes, I counted). The first 22 pages cover Korean, Chinese, Japanese (including sushi), and Thai food including appetizers, noodle soups, grilled meat, curries, and basically every Asian dish you have ever heard of. One can only wonder what miracles are going on in the kitchen, and pray with full mouth and closed eyes that everything will be alright. The last eight pages offer the usual drinks plus sake, Chinese wine, and a very adventurous tea selection including green, black, red, white, semi-fermented, and flavoured tea. If you’re already well acquainted with the cuisine of Asia, Horai is perfect for picking and choosing your favourite flavours, but for the uninitiated it can be a daunting, if not insurmountable, challenge.
