If your mum is dropping by for a visit this weekend (and happens to be as big of a pizza fan as mine), do what I do - take her to Mamma Mia. If the autumn weather holds up for a little while longer you might still be able to enjoy the terrace outside, though a warming cup of tea or coffee might be in order. Luckily Mamma Mia has expanded to include the coffee shop next door, so you’re sure to receive a decent cup from their enormous espresso machine. Calling to mind the cosmopolitan feel of Dynia (but less studenty) or Nic Nowego (with less U2), the main indoor area of the restaurant is modern and relaxed. It’s a welcome change from the usual look of Italian eateries in Krakow, which are too often wannabe trattorias with decor that ends up looking more rusty than rustic. The selection offers everything you’d expect from the Italian repertoire, and the vegetarian pizza (zucchini, peppers, broccoli, onion) is particularly palette pleasing. There’s also plenty of meat and fish on offer to keep dad happy, such as the veal saltimbocca with sage and Parma ham. If delicate issues must be brought up (current bank balance, real age of boyfriend, etc.), Mamma Mia also offers a great selection of red and white wine to ease the proceedings. Entire wheels of Parmesan for hiding behind are unfortunately not available.
