About Mleczarnia

Kazimierz yields to yet another warp in the space-time continuum. Lose focus for a split-second and you might think you've slipped back through a rose-tinted glass to Eastern Europe circa 1930. Nostalgia fuelled with a good dose of phantasy, the proprietors stumbled across the name during rennovations, as they stripped back layers of paint from the old shop front to reveal 'Mleczarnia' ('The Dairy'). The theme continues only tenuously within: more or less freshly cut flowers spring from brightly coloured milk jugs, urns and tea pots. You'll find yourself among a menagerie of rickety old wooden furniture, with black and white portraits of a long forgotten ancestry hanging from the shabby walls, while the mortar peels away enigmatically in curling arabesques. A permanent dusk - pretty much compulsory for a cafe in Kazimierz - intensifies as you venture further in, until you reach the nebulous back room, which may or may not exist. Pay close attention to the mirror - nothing is quite as it seems. Let's just say, the view from the WC is quite remarkable. Quiet by day, pensive literary types sneak in and out, but things liven up at night. A perenially unchanging walnut cake inhabits a corner of the bar: predictable but reassuring. In summer months, don't miss the garden across the road: a veritable idyll in the gritty (vibrant) backwater that is Kazimierz. Sit back, peer into the dark abyss of your coffee, and picture yourself in a 1930's film noir. The architypal Kazimierz cafe.
