In short, 'minimal retro funk'. Should you feel the sudden urge to escape the swarthy bohemia that pervades the majority of bars in Kazimierz, 'Miejsce' ('Place') could be the place for you. Though its on the small side, it manages to pull off a kind of warehouse conversion feel - 'industrial sheek' on a minor scale. Controversially breaking with one of the most long-established precepts of Cracovian bar protocol, murk has only a secondary role to play. Decked out tastefully with retro furniture, 'Miejsce' is bright and airy, yet retains the rustic, edgy quality of a typical Kazimierz bar. Lit by a school of natty lamps plucked straight from the 1960's, with a grimy burlesque chandelier as centrepiece, thick white paint clings to the roughly finished brickwork. A sparse collection of stylized posters hang from the walls, while exposed cables march boldly in between. By day it tends to attract almost as many laptops as it does trendily clad regulars, but in the evening the work ethic eases up and with iphones carefully stowed away, the dapper clientele sink back into a stylish ambience. The staff are laid back and friendly, the music subtle and a cute wooden decking at the back offers a modicum of outdoor seating. A refreshing, understated alternative to the eerie mystique that has become almost synonymous with bars in the old Jewish quarter of Krakow.
