'Faded grandeur' is putting it politely. The George Hotel is, frankly, plain old scruffy. It does, however, have a triumvirate of saving graces. First, its location is perfect - right in the centre of the old town, about 3 minutes' walk from the Rynok (market square). Second, it is cheap. Not as cheap as you'd expect for a 'hotel' whose 'standard' rooms share horrid squat toilets and shower facilities straight out of prison, but cheap compared to the rest of the hotels in Lviv (no, Ukraine is not cheap anymore) Third, it has style. The building itself has seen better days, but my, what days they must have been - Art Deco at every turn, and an inhouse bar that celebrates the more recent advances of Socialism in its garish but effective murals. Think Borat and you'll be close to the mark. A Lviv legend.
