About De Balie

In a city overflowing with tackiness, particularly throughout the centre, De Baile made me literally stop in my tracks. Walking by I saw a mysterious arsty interior through windows that were just a bit too high to really see anything inside. But somehow, the exterior immediately said to me "roygbiv, you belong here".

So, listening to the exterior's advice, I made my way inside to discover several interconnected rooms with vast ceilings, chandeliers, and walls covered in artsy scribbles, plus a whole lotta stairs. You see, De Balie is not only a cafe. In fact, the cafe part of De Balie is considered just the "foyer"! Inside this building you will also find a restaurant, cinema, theatre, and more. De Balie is considered a whole centre for politics, culture, and media.

Sounds like heaven!! And to think just a nice looking exterior pulled me into such a great place, a place I can imagine reading about and immediately speeding over there, means it certainly must have been fate that led me here!! Or something...

Anyway the cafe itself was great. Free wi-fi, tons of pretentious looking artists, students, and cool looking old people with tortoise shell glasses and expensive looking newspapers. I can't wait to be one of them one day.

A unique way to escape the hordes of tourists in Amsterdam. Oh and the leafy green drinks everyone is drinking is mint tea, and it's divine! Yummm...
