About Cafe Philo

If you're looking for somewhere to pass a gloomy Sunday in Krakow, then Cafe Philo is a choice place to weather the maelstroms raging either outside or in your heart. Darkness and smoke compete to obscure your vision, the rich bass of jazzy numbers sung by seductive crooners, long-since-deceased, strokes your approving ears, and the wisdom contained in the hundreds of crumbling, broken-spined tomes offer latent comforts to you on your own human condition.

But enough with the melodrama! Despite its melancholy interior, Cafe Philo is actually a light-hearted and fun sort of place. The friendly staff and (it should be said) the friendly prices will soon have you ensconced on one of Philo's tatty sofas, sipping your 'sok', and indulging in some light reading as you absent-mindedly pull the foam out of the hole in the couch's cushion. The carefree clientele consists of mainly underage girls having their first cigarette and trying their hand at being recherché - plus the odd pervert hoping to impress them by reading Murakami in the corner. Coffee fiends may be interested to note that Cafe Philo serves Lavazza, as I found out when I attempted to order a 'herbata'. Must work on my Polish accent.
