About Massolit

Massolit is a wonderful second hand English language bookshop with a cafe, kids area with toys, and a thriving commercial and community noticeboard for local events and culture, finding flats and English speakers to swap lessons with or buy/sell things to from.

If you live in Poland, like to read in English, and you don't like lugging heavy books back from abroad, Massolit can keep you happy.

The atmosphere is laid back, the staff, friendly and tolerant, service is not superfast but who cares ?

Very strongly recommended. Massolit is a Krakowian institution

I'm adding a picture of their community notice board (as part of my campaign to get the British Council to change its ban on letting cultural events organisers put notices up. the British Council refuses to let me (and anyone else) publish details of events they are organising, even when they are British related and non profit...

Royvgiv asked for more info in a comment below
the British Council doesn't control the Massolit notice board. but they use it to promote themselves as you can see in the photo.

However, they do control their own notice board in Rynek Glowny, and refuse to let anyone else put notices up on the grounds there is "no demand" and that noticeboards "don't work" (according to Tony O'Brian - their director in Poland to whom I have complained). I asked for evidence that there was "no demand" and he told me it was confidential.

Hi Roygbiv

the British Council has no power over other people's notice boards. They use them, as you can see in the photo above

However, in a way that I find unacceptable, they ban others from using their noticeboards.

It's a bit ironic that while Universities, Schools, web sites like http://kulturatka.pl/ other countries cultural organisations (German, Americans, French) and even some supermarkets have noticeboards people can use for free to promote their cultural events, the British Council, whcih is partially UK tax payer funded, and which is perceived to be promoting culture, refuses.

well, in that case, let's ban all employees of the british council from using the massolit notice board! hah!

Would have preferred a bit more about Massolit and a bit less about British council's noticeboard policy!
