About U Babci Maliny

Babcia Malina's is known to any and all Krakowians. If you've received a flyer on the street, know a student in town, or know anyone who, nursing a hangover, needed something greasy and substantial to eat, you've probably heard of/ been to Babcia Malina's.

The location on Slawkowska is my personal favourite (find it through the PAN building's courtyard, then down the stairs). The decor is something that must be seen to be understood. Basically, there's a portal you go through when you open the doors at the bottom of the stairs in the basement of the PAN building which teleports you into the interior of a Polish log cabin far far away... and there are big creepy fish in a circular aquarium in the center of the room swimming small circles contemplating suicide (someone needs to join forces with me and liberate these poor bastards one day).

The food is hearty staropolski/ chlopskie jadlo fare. Not too expensive. Giant portions. My personal faves are (1) the pierogi ruskie zapiekane which come on a thick platter made of what seems to be reused stale bread (and served with a fat popsicle-stick fork and knife set) and (2) the placki po budapesztansku/ po wegiersku (slowly figuring out which one's which...).

Check out the other locations for a change, or if you're hankerin for some babcia placki later in the evening (they're open at Szpitalna 38 until 9 or 10pm)

gulasz w chlebie is my tip- awesome! if you can get past the slightly theme park feel of the place (and the shocking revelation that there's no alcohol), the food is great value
