Opening last month in a no-expenses-spared flurry of champagne, gateaux and scantily-clad models (or so a gloating source revealed to me), it seems Scandal Royal did everything right, except remember to invite yours truly to the grand launch. I’m not the bitter type, so I decided to pop in and check out Le Scandale’s new gaff and see what surprises were in store. Quite a few as it turns out. Whereas the ground floor resembles a more decadent version of the original Kazimierz branch, there’s also a smart upstairs overlooking Plac Szczepański and a basement level where live bands play nightly from 10:30 pm. Intriguingly a large courtyard opens up out back, but it’s unclear as yet whether a beer garden will be cultivated here or not. Back inside and there are some nice touches to the d»cor, such as luminescent ceiling panels, a huge stacked chandelier and lampshades straight out of a Parisian brothel. My favourite features though were the dramatic and fantastical toilet doors, which look like they’d be better used to guard the Mines of Moria, rather than an ordinary public convenience. Overall Scandal Royal won’t revolutionise Krakow’s nightlife, but if you have a trophy girlfriend to show off then this is as good a place as any to be seen.
