One doesn’t like to bandy travel writers’ cliches around willy-nilly, but if anywhere in Krakow deserves the over-used accolade “a hidden gem,” then it’s Galeria Przyrody. Residing unassumingly on ulica Studencka, this delightful herbaciarnia (tea house) may only be a minute off the main track, but you won’t find any tourists taking time out here; nor have many expats discovered the venue. This is something of a shame as the distinctive interior alone, which features a cave-like ceiling, walls covered in brushwood and several aquarium tanks and glass cages (from which brightly-coloured fish and curious chameleons stare) places the Galeria Przyrody above most of its rivals around the Square. If a hot drink is the last thing on your mind this July, then you’ll be pleased to know that a a range of smoothies and ice creams complement the menu of teas from India, China, Japan and Africa. Contrary to our last visit, the cafe now serves alcohol, and bottled Erdinger and Zlatopramen beers are just two yeasty treats available for thirsty tipplers.
