About U Ziyada

U Ziyada is situated atop the hill at Przegorzaly (near the UJ Dom Goscinny) in a beautiful castle which used to house Nazi Luftwaffe officers during WWII. The artefacts of the former use have been unceremoniously destroyed; Nazi eagles were chiselled off the front and back facades long ago, and there used to be a two metre wide stone fountain in the center of the castle's lobby in the shape of a giant Swastika (I personally petitioned the head of the UJ deparment who owns the building several times over a year ago to adress this monstrosity in the lobby (put a plaque up or something - dont just leave a giant swastika up in the lobby!) but only a few months ago, someone (?) stupidly authorized workers to come in with sledgehammers and smash the thing to bits).

Anyhow, back to the restaurant. It is run by a gentleman of Kurdish descent, and there has lately appeared on the menu a Kurdish soup. All the soups here are to die for. The menu has decent Polish dishes, and other dishes such as... spaghetti.

A so-called zestaw studencki can be had for a mere 12zl, which includes a soup, salad, main, and drink. A super-extra deal.

Also, there is a large veranda out back hanging over the cliff, looking over the Wisla and fields beyond. You can even see the Tatras from your table on a clear day. Beautiful view.

Getting up there is a bitch though. Drive up the hill or take the 409 from Cracovia.

It's a great place - service can be patchy, but with that awesome view - who cares, right?!
