You can't go wrong when you set up a nightclub in a charismatic old fort, and Veneranda's 16th century brickwork, refurbished with pavilion, swimming pool, stage and several bars is one of the best looking venues I'm ever set my slinky foot in. Around midnight, or even later, anyone still drinking in Hvar town makes the ascent up the pine-covered hillside by the harbour to Veneranda to finish off the night drinking and dancing under the stars. It's every bit as romantic as it sounds, even if the music is of the more disco variety than serious nightclub. Everyone from Aussies in shorts and thongs (that's flip flops to us) and elegantly dressed Italian girls mingle and have fun, with plenty of locals getting in on the action too. A Hvar highlight.
